The Story Beyond ” I DO”
Meet Brandon Lail, a man just struggling to pay his bills after continuous operations battling a very rare type of cancer called Chondrosarcoma. Living each day watching as the amount of debt piled up around him without any residual income. So much so, that his family had constructed a raffle to try to keep him afloat financially, even a few facebook friends reached out to find ways to help. But there was this one friend, who was his insurance agent, that seemed to really want to help Brandon.
Unbeknownst to him, that conversation would be a turning point in his life. She kindly and willingly gave money to assist in Brandon keeping a roof over his head. They hit it off during the exchange and as they say, sparkles flew. Before he got home, Brandon had a message from Jordan telling him that she would love to hang out sometime. He wasn’t seeing anyone, and she wasn’t either, so the timing couldn’t have been better. Finally, light in the darkness. This moment was when the transformation within him started to happen.
Even with all that Brandon is facing, Jordan chose to be the most encouraging person in his life. She responded with patience and without condemnation when his foolish mouth outweighed his actions as Brandon was going through surgery after surgery. Never once faltering in her choice to be by his side as it was discovered that cancer had moved to Brandon’s lungs. Jordan knew that God was going to use Brandon in a mighty way and she wanted to be part of that.
Jordan made the choice to place herself in Brandon’s shoes and worked endlessly to understand everything he was going through. Jordan’s faith and love in Brandon was a big factor in him finding the path back to God. She has been his rock when Brandon is beyond frustration and his guiding light when he loses his way. Everyday growing in love and faith as they each bare the weight of each other’s actions while showing grace and patience towards one another in a world where little is given.
On a beautiful fall day on October 23rd, 2016, Jordan and Brandon were united, as one, under the eyes of God, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains at Sierra Vista in Bedford, Virginia. Battle tested and facing a daily war that would mean fighting side by side to battle for whatever life threw their way, together! As soon as Brandon said “I do”, his life of fighting alone changed forever, gaining not only a wife but a wise and beautiful daughter.
Stella, the copy and paste version of Jordan, was the best wedding present Brandon could have gotten. Teaching him every day how to love with every inch of his heart, even though some days he wants to hide away. Stella challenges Brandon daily to be the leader she needs him to be, the dad who she can look up to and be proud of for the way he faces each day and his interactions with people along his journey. It would be wise to remember this little girls name, she is on a path to change the world.
Almost a year and a half later, the question still remains. Why would a beautiful, caring, and driven woman fall in love with an overweight man whose body has been disfigured from the struggles of cancer? Yet she wakes up day after day, loving him more than the day before, praying over him as if she was sitting down with God, at a coffee shop, just catching up. She reminds Brandon every day that she loves him and she always will as long as Brandon can make her smile.
It could be very easy to focus on the bad that surrounds Brandon and Jordan every day, but they chose to follow through with their promises of ” I Do” for each other. Looking for only the good and the blessings that God has provided them each and every day. Jordan and Brandon are facing an obstacle that married couples should only have to worry about after 30 or 40 years of marriage. But yet, they face it head on every day, determined to be focused on this life, and recognize their eternal bond with each other. Knowing that one day their bodies will fail, they live each day knowing their souls interlocked forever in a timeframe that never expires.
1 Peter 3:7 – Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
